THREE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR-SQUIRREL CAGE

Three Phase Induction Motor - Squirrel Cage

The squirrel cage induction motor is a type of AC (alternating current) electric motor widely used in various applications due to its robust construction, reliability, and relatively low cost.

Its name derives from the resemblance of its rotor to a squirrel's cage, consisting of conductive bars embedded in a laminated iron core.

  • Construction: The stator consists of windings placed in slots around an iron core. The rotor has conductive bars (usually copper or aluminum) short-circuited at both ends, resembling a squirrel cage.
  • Operation: When AC current flows through the stator windings, it creates a rotating magnetic field. This rotating field induces currents in the rotor bars, causing them to produce their own magnetic field. The interaction between the stator and rotor magnetic fields results in torque, which rotates the shaft.

Squirrel cage induction motors are known for their simplicity, durability, and ability to operate at high speeds. They are commonly used in applications such as pumps, fans, compressors, conveyor belts, and industrial machinery.
