Cup Anemometer for Measuring Wind Speed
The PCE-A420 from PCE Instruments is a cup anemometer for measuring wind speed. The three cups located horizontally are attached to the vertical axis of the anemometer and detect the wind speed. The principle of measurement is simple: the stronger the wind blows, the faster the plastic cups will rotate. The wind speed is calculated from the rotational speed of the shaft. The cup anemometer has an IP 65 protection rating, which protects it from the ingress of dust and water. You can select the unit you want to use for the measurement: m/s, km/h, knots, mph, ft/min. The PCE Instruments air velocity meter memorizes the maximum and minimum values, which you can retrieve later on the screen. In addition, the anemometer is equipped with a memory. The memory allows the user to save the current measured value with just a button and display it again on the screen after another measurement has been taken.
To extend battery life, the cup anemometer has an automatic shut-off. The anemometer runs on four 1.5 V AAA batteries.
What is a Cup Anemometer?
"Anemos" is the Greek word for wind. Therefore, a cup anemometer is used for measuring wind speed. The cup anemometer is the most commonly used for wind measurement. Like any cup anemometer, it has a vertical axis, on which the cross / spoon star is mounted, which is set in motion by the wind.
Principle of Measurement
The higher the wind speed, the faster the open hemispheres rotate. The number of revolutions of the cup cross per unit of time is measured electronically and indicated as wind speed on the anemometer screen. Cup anemometers are often combined with a wind vane that, mounted on a support, serves as a fixed measurement unit. Our PCE-A420 cup anemometer allows for mobile and fixed measurements of wind speeds up to 35 m/s.
