The first digit refers to protection against solid objects, while the second digit refers to protection against water.

• 0 - No protection
• 1 - Protected against solid objects up to 50mm (e.g., accidental contact with a hand) and protected against dripping water (condensation)
• 2 - Protected against solid objects up to 12mm (e.g., fingers) and protected against dripping water
• 3 - Protected against solid objects up to 2.5mm (tools and wires) and protected against direct spray of water at angles up to 15° from the vertical
• 4 - Protected against solid objects up to 1mm (small tools and wires) and protected against spraying water from all directions
• 5 - Protected against dust, limited penetration (does not form harmful deposits) and protected against low-pressure water jets
• 6 - Totally protected against dust and protected against high-pressure water jets (can be used on boat decks)
